About this event
As the number of Jewish settlers fleeing antisemitism in Europe grows and Palestinians unite in an act of the greatest resistance in 30 years of British rule, all sides face inevitable confrontation. Critical moments are approaching for the future of the British Empire and Palestine.
The film tells the story of the Arab uprising in the 1930s against the British colonizer and the increasing influx of Jewish settlers. The Israeli government banned the film's screening in Jerusalem after police raided its only (so far) showing, arresting the organizers and accusing them of terrorist activity. This did not prevent Palestine from submitting the film to last year's Oscar race, thereby securing it broad educational distribution. The official premiere took place at the Toronto Film Festival, where the filmmakers were awarded 20 minutes of standing ovation.
The film was directed by Annemarie Jacir ("Wajib", "Salt of This Sea") and is the only narrative feature filmed in Palestine since the 2023 invasion.
The lead role is played by debutant Karim Daouda Anaya, alongside Saleh Bakri, Hiam Abass, Yasmine Al Massri, Yumna Marwan and a group of British actors: Jeremy Irons, Liam Cunningham, Bill Howle and Robert Aramayo.
The screening will be preceded by a lecture by Jakub Marciniak, followed by a special discussion as part of the Film Discussion Club format. The conversation will offer an opportunity not only to analyze the film itself, but also to examine the region's history. The repercussions of the events that Jacir focuses on are still felt today.
Partners of the Polish distribution are: Le Monde Diplomatique - Polish edition and Fundacja Nominae Rosae
The film was brought to Polish cinemas thanks to the Immersja portal and FFIPP - Educational Network for Human Rights in Palestine and Israel.
