Stand-up, a comedic art form in the shape of a monologue delivered before an audience, is today one of the most popular entertainment genres in Poland. Unlike cabaret, the point of stand-up rests on the performer's charisma and direct contact with the audience: what matters is not memorised scripts or costumes, but words, gestures, jokes, and interaction with the crowd. The best example of how far this genre can take someone is Rafał Pacześ, a Łódź native.
Pacześ from Łódź
Rafał Pacześ is a graduate of the Łódź University of Technology (Faculty of Management and Organisation) and for years also worked as a sales representative. Today he is Poland's most popular stand-up comedian: videos on his "Rafał Pacześ" YouTube channel have passed 100 million views, and he was the first performer in the history of Polish stand-up to fill the Atlas Arena in Łódź on his own. Earlier in his career he performed at, among others, Teatr Palladium in Warsaw and Scenografia in Łódź, sharing the stage with artists such as Cezary Pazura, Katarzyna Piasecka and Kacper Ruciński, and he twice won the Łódź Stand-Up festival.
His show "ProkuraTOUR'a" was released on Netflix, and together with Łukasz "Lotek" Lodkowski he tours the country with "Pacześ x Lotek 2", one of the largest tours in the history of Polish stand-up. As part of that tour, the two artists recorded material in Łódź, at Scenografia. Off stage, Pacześ hosts the motoring show "Czarna Wołga", has published two novels, and co-owns the artist agency King of Entertainment. He has also opened his own restaurant, Komediowa, at ul. Piotrkowska 12 in Łódź, combining food with a comedy-themed atmosphere: a breakfast and lunch spot by day, a cafe and cocktail bar by evening.
The City in a Crooked Mirror
Pacześ comes from Łódź, so it is no surprise that his material has engaged with the city for years, even though his observations and jokes translate easily to the whole of Poland. He can point out even the smallest flaws in his home city, but above all he presents situations that an average Łódź resident recognises: life around Manufaktura, corporate team-building events, or walks down Piotrkowska have been the subject of his jokes for years, and as his popularity grows, so does the stock of stories he can draw on.
Pacześ's performances, which run over an hour, hold the attention even of a demanding audience, and the energy and pace of his delivery keep the good mood with the crowd long after they leave the venue. Tickets for his shows, including those in Łódź, sell quickly, so it is worth looking for them in advance on official ticketing platforms, and checking his current tour schedule on his social media profiles.
