Daniel Liebeskind is currently one of the most renowned and respected architects in the world. He was born on May 12, 1946 in Łódź to a family of Polish Jews who managed to survive the Holocaust. Liebeskind initially studied music in Tel Aviv, but ultimately abandoned this field for architecture, which he completed at Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, where he currently lives. Since 1965 he has held American citizenship. Daniel Liebeskind was also a lecturer at many world universities, including in the United States, Germany, and Canada. Since 1989 he has been running Studio Daniel Liebeskind together with his wife Nina, who shares his passion. Privately, the architect is a happy husband and father of three children: Lev, Noam, and Rachel.
World-Renowned Architect with Polish Roots
Liebeskind, as he has repeatedly emphasized, grew up in a Polish-Jewish family where both Polish and Yiddish were spoken. From his home he inherited a love of culture, art, and a patriotic attitude toward Poland. In numerous interviews and statements, the architect proudly emphasizes his roots. Despite living in New York, he considers Łódź to be the most important place on earth, the place that shaped his identity and his creative work visible in his projects. The renowned architect last visited his native city in 2017, accepting an invitation from the Marek Edelman Dialogue Centre. The architect's support as an ambassador during the city's bid to host EXPO 2022 is proof that he considers Łódź an important city. During his recent visit, Liebeskind positively assessed the changes taking place in the city. It is widely known that Daniel Liebeskind is to be the designer of the New Center of Łódź, but at this point there are no concrete details and arrangements, and the authorities of Łódź remain silent on the matter.
Architectural Projects
Daniel Liebeskind is a representative of deconstructivism. In his projects one can see a strong influence of philosophy, music, and also the recurring theme of the Holocaust, which makes his works not easy to perceive. He was initially called the "architect of sound" because his first projects were created on musical paper. Since childhood, Liebeskind played the accordion and it was no accident that he studied music, which is his second great passion. A characteristic feature of Liebeskind's architecture is expressive, often surprising geometric forms, but also the use of unconventional materials. Daniel Liebeskind is best known as an architect of museum projects. His most important works include: the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester, the Felix Nussbaum Museum in Germany, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, and the Jewish Museum in San Francisco. Liebeskind also has the "Ground Zero" project to his credit – the remains of the famous World Trade Center in New York. Due to the nature of his works, often marked by war, one can see an intertwining of architecture and symbolism. Through monumental, somewhat unsettling shapes, he commemorates the memory of victims of the Holocaust, from which his family survived. Daniel Liebeskind also had the opportunity to design an apartment building at ulica Złota 44 in Warsaw, which is the tallest structure in all of Europe – it measures as much as 192 meters in height and contains 52 floors. Among planned projects is also the New City Center: the Gate of Łódź. Undoubtedly, Daniel Liebeskind is one of the most important figures in the world of architecture. The prestige and talent of this Łódź native are also confirmed by awards he has received such as the Deutsche Architektpreis (German Architectural Prize) and the Hiroshima Art Prize from 2001, for which he was honored as the first architect in history.
