The Point for Łódź plebiscite was established to honour initiatives that have particularly contributed to a positive image of our city. The most creative ideas, bold visions and efforts to combat stereotypes about Łódź have been appreciated not only by the competition organizers, but above all by the city's residents.
Who does Point for Łódź distinguish?
The first edition of the plebiscite took place in 2009, when for the first time the most promising initiators of local actions were presented as examples to Łódź residents. Since then, Łódź has undergone a transformation that many a city might envy – all thanks to residents engaged in its fate. Point for Łódź was created above all to appreciate the effort put into the daily struggle against the stereotype of an ugly, grey city. Every year, among the nominated initiatives, interesting submissions appear from the most varied areas: places and events, undertakings, everyday activities, and material works and virtual creations. The multitude of positive activities covered by Point for Łódź could surprise more than one city resident!
The idea behind the plebiscite
The fundamental assumption of Point for Łódź is based on the desire to support the initiators of promising ventures and active individuals with visions that shape the image of our city. Victory in the plebiscite is not associated with a financial prize – this would contradict the disinterested approach of those involved in its course. The distinction is by design a symbolic expression of support for the activities undertaken. It is meant to encourage the undertaking of further initiatives worthy of time and attention, serving us all.
Who scored this year?
During this year's plebiscite gala, 26 distinctions were announced for initiatives that gained special recognition from the event organizers. Among the most spectacular works of Łódź architecture, the renovated BaseCamp received an award – the former building of Łódzka Drukarnia Dziełowa (Łódź Works Printing House) in a completely new form. In November 2017, its residents became students, who can now enjoy not only the immediate vicinity of the University of Łódź, but also the beauty of designer interiors. In the venues category, attention was drawn to the Tel Aviv Urban Food restaurant on ulica Piotrkowska (culinary and aesthetic qualities) and the Pop'n'art gastropub located at plac Wolności (creative approach to business and revitalization of the area).
Among the highest-rated events, we can mention the Summer Jazz Academy organized by the Wytwórnia club, the All-Poland Festival of Polish Animation O!PLA, the Year of the Avant-Garde at the Museum of Art, Ravekjavík and Zielone Smaki Łodzi. Special attention should also be paid to the honoured institutions – the recently popular Kino BODO (for creating an alternative venue for cinema enthusiasts) and MakoLab (for services in promoting Łódź).
Distinctions were not lacking in the initiatives category either. The ARCHIZO project, an architectural puzzle, was recognized as outstanding scientific assistance. The Fundacja Obszar Wspólny (Common Ground Foundation) received this year's award for cultural activities for our community. Among the individuals honoured by name were many figures who contributed to our city in a special way – distinguished were: Prof. Józefa Robakowskiego, Anna Ciarkowska, Janusz Tryzno and Radek "Redman" Stępień, also known as the Łódź Indiana Jones. For "creative madness" in a unique category, Jakub Wandachowicz received a distinction.
