Michał Bieżyński:
Alexis Diaz – creator of extraordinarily precise, carefully and meticulously sketched murals depicting various surrealist animal hybrids. Diaz's murals captivate with the care of their execution, and their greatest value and the true scope of the artist's work can best be appreciated by standing directly in front of the wall. The formal skeleton of his works is pure sketch, upon which subtle shades are layered to create the entire composition. His images consist of hundreds of thousands of tiny, delicate lines, whose actual accumulation we only notice when we stand before the mural. In photographs on a computer screen or when we see the mural from the perspective of a vehicle passing by the wall, we have no chance of perceiving this original and labor-intensive technique. To achieve such an effect, Diaz does not use spray paint; acrylic paint in some works serves merely as a background, and he creates the images with a very narrow brush using special ink. The result is a gigantic sketch that, in its precision of execution, resembles medieval manuscripts. The disproportion between the brush thickness and the canvas size is unimaginable, which is why, for example, the mural in Łódź took almost a month to create.
