Skwer kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego in Piotrków Trybunalski has an open-air saline graduation tower for inhalation and a flower meadow amid neighbourhood greenery.
Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński Square in Piotrków Trybunalski is a small public green space combining a commemorative function with health-promoting elements. In addition to greenery, there is a brine inhalation pavilion here, a solution rarely found in a typical residential square.
The square bears the name of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, Primate of Poland in 1948–1981, one of the most important figures in the Polish Church of the twentieth century. The naming reflects the practice of commemorating him in public space in many Polish cities.
A wildflower meadow has been created in the square, which serves as a habitat for bees and other beneficial insects. This solution, implemented in Piotrków Trybunalski as part of the city's greening programme, is cheaper to maintain than a traditional lawn and more beneficial for the local ecosystem.
A distinctive feature of the square is a brine inhalation pavilion, an inhalation structure using brine for health purposes. Brine inhalations support the respiratory tract and are a popular form of prevention, available here directly in the open air without the need to travel to a spa resort.
Such structures are usually built with a wooden frame filled with hawthorn twigs, down which the brine flows. Breaking against the surface of the twigs, the liquid creates a fine mist of microscopic droplets in the air, which is inhaled by people in the vicinity of the pavilion.
The square is maintained by the Roads and City Maintenance Department in Piotrków Trybunalski, which is responsible for most of the city's public green spaces, including parks and residential squares. A similar commemorative character, though with different subject matter, is found at Teachers of Clandestine Education Square, also located in Piotrków Trybunalski.
