This 2022 bronze memorial bench by the collegiate church depicts Jan Łaski, Primate of Poland born in Łask in 1456 and author of the first codification of Polish law.
At plac Jarosława Dąbrowskiego in Łask, next to the collegiate church, stands a bronze monument to Jan Łaski in the form of a commemorative bench. It was unveiled on 25 September 2022 as part of celebrations marking the 600th anniversary of the granting of city rights to Łask, in a location closely connected with the figure it commemorates.
Jan Łaski was born in 1456 in Łask and died on 19 May 1531 in Kalisz. From 1510 to 1531 he served as Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland, and from 1503 held the office of Grand Chancellor of the Crown. Previously, from 1501, he was royal secretary. In 1506 he drafted the Statute of Łaski, the first codification of Polish law. In 1515 he received the title of Papal Legate Born from the Pope.
The sculpture was created by Karol Badyna. The monument takes the form of a bronze commemorative bench divided into three sections and depicts Jan Łaski with the insignia of a bishop, a mitre and a crosier, holding the Statute of Łaski on his lap. This arrangement is intended to illustrate both of his roles, as a clergyman and chancellor. The monument is listed on the PTTK Commemorative Benches Trail.
The location next to the church is not a matter of chance. Jan Łaski provided funds for the construction and furnishing of this church, subsequently consecrated it and elevated it to the status of a collegiate church. The monument was therefore erected in a place with which the figure was directly connected during his lifetime.
The commemorative bench from 2022 is not the first monument to Jan Łaski in the city. Already in 1984, a bronze plaque with a bust dedicated to this figure was erected in Łask. The object is adjacent to the monument to an aeroplane in the centre of Łask.
