Military Parish of Christ the Redeemer and the Most Holy Name of Mary

The church on Kościuszki Street 19 in Sieradz is a parish and garrison church of the Field Ordinariate of the Polish Armed Forces. The building was erected in the late 19th century as an evangelical meeting house and has belonged to the military parish under the dedication of Christ the Redeemer and the Most Holy Name of Mary only since 2001.

From an evangelical prayer house to a garrison church

The church was built in 1889–1897 for the evangelical-Augsburg parish of the Kalisz superintendent's jurisdiction and initially served as a prayer house. It was consecrated in 1925. After the Second World War, the building was taken over by the Polish Catholic Church and was then dedicated to Christ the Supreme High Priest. From 11 November 2001, it has belonged to the military parish, erected on the same day. Three changes of affiliation within a hundred years document what happened to this once multi-denominational city.

Military parish and Sieradz garrison

The parish serves soldiers and military personnel of the Sieradz garrison and their families. For years it belonged to the Silesian Military Deanery, and after organisational changes in the Field Ordinariate it was placed directly under the bishop's vicar for coordinating the work of deans. The city's military traditions date back to the interwar period, when battalions of the 31st Kaniów Riflemen Regiment were stationed in Sieradz. Today the garrison is formed by a signals unit, previously known as the 15th Sieradz Command Support Brigade, operating since 2024 as the 15th Signals Brigade, which has cultivated the heritage of the 31st Regiment since 2025.

What can be seen

The church is a brick building, single-storey, with a pitched roof, of modest form typical of 19th-century evangelical meeting houses in the Kingdom of Poland. The building is under conservation protection and is listed in the heritage register on the basis of an entry from 5 January 1988. The parish office is located at the same address as the church. Military churches are usually open mainly during services and ceremonies, so entry to the interior outside Mass times should be arranged in advance.

The church in the context of Sieradz heritage

Kościuszki Street lies close to the historic centre, so the garrison church can easily be visited during a walk around the old town. Nearby are the collegiate basilica of All Saints, the Dominican complex with the church of Saint Stanisław, and the market square with its old buildings.
