This obelisk in Park im. rtm. Pileckiego commemorates teachers from the Wieluń region murdered between 1939 and 1945, drawing residents for prayer each 13 April, the Katyn anniversary.
The Monument to Murdered Teachers commemorates educators from the Wieluń region who lost their lives between 1939 and 1945 as a result of German terror. The obelisk stands in Park imienia rtm. Witolda Pileckiego on ul. Kopernika, serving as a place of collective memory and tribute to the generation of teachers who did not survive the Second World War.
Before the outbreak of the Second World War, Wieluń had a significant group of educators engaged in the education of children and young people. Following the entry of the Third Reich in 1939, teachers found themselves among particularly threatened groups. Germany pursued a policy of physical annihilation of the Polish intelligentsia in order to weaken resistance among the occupied population. The teachers of Wieluń fell victim to this policy of terror.
The obelisk is a symbol of commemoration and tribute to the victims. Each year, particularly on the anniversary of Katyń (13 April), residents of Wieluń gather at the monument to honour the memory of the murdered teachers. Observances include elements of tradition: flowers, candles, prayer. This place serves as a function of emotional and reflective dialogue with the past, reminding the living of the price that the generation of occupation paid for resistance.
The monument is located in a park honouring the memory of rtm. Witold Pilecki, one of the most significant opponents and patriots of the Second World War. Pilecki, a cavalry captain [rotmistrz] of the Home Army and a prisoner of Auschwitz, was the author of the famous report on conditions in the camp. The placement of the monument to teachers in the park bearing his name emphasises thematic coherence: both monuments serve to honour people who resisted totalitarian systems.
