A mural on Rewolucji 1905 r. street transfers onto a tenement facade a typographic design by Samuel Szczekacz from his pre-war, avant-garde period in Łódź.
The mural at ul. Rewolucji 1905 r. 10 in central Łódź was created in 2012 as part of the Urban Forms Gallery and is based on a typographic design by Samuel Szczekacz from the 1930s, an artist associated with the Łódź avant-garde.
Samuel Szczekacz was born on 3 May 1917 in Łódź and died on 27 September 1983 in Paris. He was a painter, sculptor and designer of Polish-Israeli heritage. In the mid-1930s he studied under Władysław Strzemiński, learning painting, graphic design, typography, sculpture and architectural design.
In 1937 Szczekacz exhibited his work at the Institute for the Promotion of Art in Poland. Two years later he emigrated to Palestine and took the surname "Zur", working in Tel Aviv as a designer, typographer, architect and sculptor. In 1966 he designed exhibition pavilions for international trade fairs in Brussels and Poznań. After 45 years of absence from public exhibitions, his work was shown at the "Présences Polonaises" exhibition at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
The 2012 mural transfers to the building façade a typographic composition designed by Szczekacz during his avant-garde period in Łódź in the 1930s. The work is a tribute to the memory of the 1905 Revolution in Łódź, referencing through its location the street named after it.
The mural is part of the Urban Forms Gallery, run by the Urban Forms Foundation, which for over a decade has invited artists to paint the walls of buildings in central Łódź. In the same area, at ul. Rewolucji 1905 roku 39/41, there is also a mural by Barys from 2012, and on ul. Nowa a mural by Sebastian Bożek "Continuous City" was created in 2016.
