DALeast's second Łódź mural, on the corner of Pomorska and Wierzbowa streets, shows a rising wave built from hundreds of lines, with a small bird at its peak.
On the facade of a tenement building at the intersection of Pomorska and Wierzbowa streets, at Pomorska 92, there is a mural by Chinese artist DALEAST from 2015. It depicts a wave composed of hundreds of precisely arranged lines, and at its crest is a small bird, a motif characteristic of this artist's work. The work is part of the permanent Urban Forms Gallery and has remained on the same wall in central Łódź since its creation.
The author is DALEAST, a street artist from China, known for techniques combining painting with sculptural form modelling using densely arranged lines that resemble a grid up close and form a coherent shape from a distance. The mural at Pomorska was created in 2015 and is not the only work by DALEAST in Łódź; the artist also created a work at Łąkowa 10, making the city one of the places where his characteristic style can be traced across two different walls.
The composition consists of hundreds of precisely arranged lines created with spray paint, which together form the shape of a rising wave. The bird placed at its crest is an element that recurs in DALEAST's work, recognizable also in his other realizations worldwide. The wave motif refers to the constant changes occurring in the surrounding environment, and according to descriptions accompanying the work's creation, it also makes a wordplay reference to the name of Łódź, in which the wave has become a kind of visual pun.
The mural is one of the works in the Urban Forms Gallery, a permanent exhibition of street art in Łódź's public space, run by the Urban Forms Foundation since September 2011. The gallery comprises 21 works created on buildings in the city centre, forming a walking route and bringing together various styles and nationalities of artists invited to participate in the project. DALEAST's wave is among the permanent works, permanently inscribed in the landscape of this part of Śródmieście [city centre district].
The mural was created using spray paint, and its form is based on the repeated application of thin lines that up close create the impression of a dense grid, and from a distance compose into a fluid, undulating shape. This technique is DALEAST's signature and allows his works to be distinguished from other realizations in the gallery, based on flat areas of colour or photorealistic portraits.
