About Mural - Girl from Włodzimierz Pfeiffer's Photograph - Piotr Saul and Damian Idzikowski, 2016

Mural on the wall at ul. Zielna commemorates a famous photograph by Włodzimierz Pfeiffer. Work by Piotr Saul and Damian Idzikowski draws attention from street art and photography enthusiasts.

On the wall of a tenement building at ulica Zielna 9 in Bałuty, a portrait of a girl was painted in 2016, reproduced from an archival photograph by Włodzimierz Pfeiffer from 1936. It is one of the works from the "Children of Bałuty – murals of remembrance" project, which restores the faces of children connected to the former Łódź ghetto.

A different girl than on Berlińskiego

In the same year, these same artists painted another portrait of a girl from Pfeiffer's photograph on ulica Berlińskiego 15. Both murals have nearly identical titles, but they depict two different girls captured by the photographer in separate photographs. These are two distinct locations in the city, not two copies of the same work.

Authors and technique

The mural was painted by Piotr Saul, associated with the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, and Damian Idzikowski from the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. Both artists executed around a dozen works on the walls of Bałuty tenement buildings as part of the project, including both portraits based on Pfeiffer's photographs.

The Children of Bałuty project

The cycle "Children of Bałuty – murals of remembrance" started in 2012 on the initiative of Katarzyna Tośta, with the participation of the association "Na co dzień i od święta" [Everyday and on Holidays]. The murals are created on buildings of the former Łódź ghetto and commemorate the fates of Polish, Jewish and Romani children who found themselves in this area during the war. By 2016, at least 21 works had been created as part of the project, including the portrait of Abramek Koplowicz.

Practicalities

  • Address: ulica Zielna 9, Łódź, Bałuty district.
  • Getting there: the area of the former Łódź ghetto in Bałuty, on foot or by public transport.
  • What to expect: mural on a tenement building wall visible from street level, accessible at all times; as part of a walk along the memorial mural trail, it is worth pairing it with the sister work on Berlińskiego.
