Brazilian artist Nunca's mural on Narutowicza street brings an image of the Amazon jungle with indigenous figures into the centre of Łódź.
At ulica Narutowicza 25 in Łódź, near Łódź Fabryczna railway station, stands a mural by Brazilian artist NUNCA from October 2014. It brings to the city centre an image of the Amazon jungle with figures of forest indigenous people.
NUNCA, actually Francisco Rodrigues de Silva, comes from the Itaquera district in São Paulo. He began his street art career at the age of twelve, joining a local group of pichadores, graffiti painters active in that part of the city. His works later appeared in a prestigious street art exhibition at the Tate Modern in London in 2008, which was an important point in his career.
The mural shows a landscape of the Amazon jungle and figures of forest indigenous people. The shading technique characteristic of NUNCA resembles traditional woodcuts and linocuts: contrasting, deep lines build an impression of drama and space, even though the image is flat and painted on a building wall.
The mural was created as part of the fourth edition of the Urban Forms Gallery, run by the Urban Forms Foundation in Łódź. Together with the mural by DALeast at Łąkowa and the mural by BORONDO at Pomorska, it forms part of a larger mural trail in this part of the city.
