A colourful mural on the wall of the Fundacja Gajusz building is an example of Łódź street art. It is worth visiting Dąbrowskiego Street to see works by artists who create contemporary pieces on the city's walls.
On the wall of the Fundacja Gajusz building at ulica Dąbrowskiego 87 in Górna, a girl on a swing shaped like a pink flamingo has been painted. The author of the mural is Marta Zawieja, a painter and independent graphic designer, and the building serves as a hospice for children.
The composition shows a girl swinging on a swing formed in the shape of a large, pink bird. According to the author's description, the girl's hair symbolises imagination and free spirit, whilst the flamingo itself represents the care and support the foundation gives to those in its care. The whole work is read as a metaphor for a passage between two worlds: a dark, starry background and a large, warm-coloured bird.
The fragment of the mural with stars was painted with paint that glows in the dark, so after dusk the background changes character and becomes visible differently than during the day.
The mural design received a Silver Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in the 2019-2020 edition, awarded as part of the A' Design Award and Competition.
Fundacja Gajusz provides hospice care for terminally ill children. Since 2005, the Home Hospice has been operating, covering Łódź and the region, and in 2013 the foundation opened a residential hospice along with a perinatal hospice. The mural on the elevation of the building at Dąbrowskiego 87 has accompanied this part of the foundation's activities from the street side.
