Mural - OTECKI (Poland), 2012

Rybna 2/4, Łódź
About Mural - OTECKI (Poland), 2012

OTECKI's mural on Rybna street combines cubist forms with motifs from Slavic folklore, legends and folk paper-cuts.

The mural on ulica Rybna 2/4 in Śródmieście, Łódź was painted in 2012 by Wojciech Kołacz, an artist known as Otecki, as part of the Urban Forms Gallery. The work draws from Slavic folklore, combining cubist forms with elements of folk art.

Artist

Otecki is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław and has been painting murals since the late 1990s. In his works he uses wall painting as a way of telling urban stories.

Motif and style

The composition references Slavic folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales. The artist combines cubist forms with paper cut-outs characteristic of folk art, and introduces plant and animal motifs into the composition, which add dynamism to the wall. This way of painting sets his works apart from realistic or photographic murals found in other parts of the city. He selects colours to harmonise with the building wall and the street surroundings, rather than contrast sharply with them.

Urban Forms Gallery

The mural was created in 2012 as part of the Urban Forms Foundation project, through which Łódź tenement houses acquired large-scale works by Polish and foreign artists. The wall remains the property of the building manager, and the foundation coordinates further works painted under the same programme. In the city centre, at ulica Sienkiewicza 71, there is a mural ZOER x VELVET from the same programme.
