Mural - TAKIE PANY (Poland), 2015

Rewolucji 1905 r. 58, Łódź
About Mural - TAKIE PANY (Poland), 2015

A black-and-white mural by the TAKIE PANY group recreates workers' protest scenes from 1905-1907, with PPS and Bund flags, on a street named after that revolution.

On Rewolucji 1905 r. [Revolution of 1905 Street] 58 in Śródmieście [City Centre district] Łódź stands a black and white mural depicting a crowd of workers, based on archival photographs from strikes and demonstrations from 1905-1907. It was painted by a group of artists working under the name TAKIE PANY, and the work bears a title that directly references the revolutionary history of the street where it was created.

What the mural shows

The composition recreates scenes from workers' demonstrations from over a hundred years ago: crowds of people carrying flags, among which one can identify symbols of the Polish Socialist Party and the Bund, a Jewish socialist organisation. The mural reminds us that workers of different nationalities and faiths took part in the strikes, Poles, Jews and Germans, Catholics, Protestants and followers of Judaism, fighting together for workers' rights and social emancipation.

When it was created

Work on the mural was completed at the end of November 2015. The project was realised with support from the National Centre for Culture and the Modern Education Foundation SPUNK, and the whole work functions under the motto "You live in a city of revolution", emphasising Łódź's connection to the events of the 1905 revolution.

Why this street

Rewolucji 1905 r. street took its name from the events that the mural commemorates, so placing the work in this location is no coincidence. It is one of several Łódź murals that recall the workers' roots of the city and the role that factory Łódź played in the events of the 1905-1907 revolution.
