Deformed, sharply contrasting figures in Zbiok's comic-inspired style on a wall on Traugutta street criticise social stratification and the dehumanisation of city dwellers.
The ZBIOK mural occupies the wall of a building at ulica Traugutta 9 in Łódź, in a space designed as a woonerf-type pedestrian zone. It was created in 2011 as part of a series of artistic meetings titled "Skrzyżowania Niepodporządkowane" (Insubordinate Intersections).
The mural was created by Sławek "Zbiok" Czajkowski, born in 1982 in Zielona Góra. He lives and works in Wrocław and is a graduate of the Institute of Art and Visual Culture at the University of Zielona Góra. His work is recognised by its characteristic combination of sharply contrasting colours and distorted figures that evoke comic book aesthetics and cubist representations of the human form. This recognisable style is also visible in the Łódź work on Traugutta, where geometric deformations of silhouettes create a disquieting, deliberately inharmonious image.
Zbiok's Łódź work was created as part of the "Skrzyżowania Niepodporządkowane" cycle, an artistic project linked to the Owoce i Warzywa club-café and the Vlepvnet foundation. The mural was placed on the building's facade in a space that had been previously transformed into a shared area for pedestrians, which additionally exposes the work from the street side. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Urban Forms Foundation, which during this period coordinated successive mural projects in Łódź involving artists from Poland and abroad.
The composition carries a clear social message. Deformed figures composed of geometric blocks refer to the problem of social stratification and the dehumanisation of city inhabitants, and the artist directly linked the theme to criticism of extreme economic liberalism. Form serves specific content here, rather than visual effect alone, which distinguishes this mural from purely decorative works on Łódź facades.
