A 1904 cemetery church on the Orthodox section of the Doły cemetery, one of four Russian Orthodox churches in Łódź surviving intact from before 1914.
The Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God stands in the Orthodox sector of the cemetery at Doły, at ulica Telefoniczna 4 in Bałuty. It is a burial chapel belonging to the parish of Saint Alexander Nevsky, erected in 1904.
The church was designed by architect Franciszek Chełmiński, and construction was completed in 1904. The plan of the chapel is based on a Greek cross with short arms, crowned with an onion dome topped by an Orthodox cross.
The building was constructed from red clinker brick, with architectural elements executed in white plaster, in Byzantine-Russian style. It was entered in the register of monuments on 20 December 1983 under number A/293.
The church is one of four Orthodox chapels erected by Russians before 1914 that have survived in Łódź in their entirety. Łódź is the only city of the former Congress Kingdom in which all four Russian Orthodox churches from this period have been preserved.
In 2020, the interior of the church underwent renovation. The iconostasis, altar table and analogions (reading stands used during services) were replaced at that time.
The building stands in the Orthodox sector of the historic cemetery at Doły, at ulica Telefoniczna 4. The church serves as a cemetery chapel of the parish of Saint Alexander Nevsky, whose administrative office is located at ulica Narutowicza 46/1. This is where you should contact to arrange access to the interior.
