A square on the Piastowskie estate in Piotrków Trybunalski commemorates the Secret Teaching Organisation, whose members ran clandestine lessons during the occupation.
Skwer Nauczycieli Tajnego Nauczania on Osiedle Piastowskie in Piotrków Trybunalski commemorates teachers who conducted secret teaching during the German occupation, despite the ban on education imposed by the occupying authorities.
The patronage of the square refers to the Secret Teaching Organisation, established on 26 October 1939 in Warsaw as a response by the teaching profession to the German occupier's ban on running schools. Teachers affiliated with this organisation held classes underground throughout the war, exposing themselves to reprisals.
26 October is observed in Poland as the Day of Remembrance for the Secret Teaching Organisation. The Polish Teachers' Union organises ceremonies on this day to recall the dedication of secret teachers. The square in Piotrków Trybunalski is part of this tradition of commemoration.
Secret teaching during the German occupation included classes at primary school level as well as secret teaching at secondary and higher levels. Teachers conducting such classes risked arrest, deportation to a concentration camp or death if the occupier discovered their activities.
The square is located on Osiedle Piastowskie in Piotrków Trybunalski. Those planning a visit should look to the osiedle area itself and confirm the exact address on site. Another memorial square in the same city is Skwer kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego.
