Sixty colourful umbrellas suspended over Fabryczna street, rebuilt as a woonerf, illuminated in the evening together with the surrounding façades.
Coloured Umbrellas on Fabryczna Street is a colourful installation suspended above Fabryczna Street in Zduńska Wola, one of the elements of the reconstruction of this street into the first woonerf in the city – a space combining the functions of a roadway, pedestrian zone and meeting place.
60 multicoloured umbrellas with a diameter of 1.3 metres have been suspended above the street. The idea of hanging umbrellas over streets originates from Portugal, where in 2012 during the Art Festival in Águeda an advertising agency proposed them. From there the idea spread across Europe, reaching among others Paris, Warsaw and Łódź.
The reconstruction of Fabryczna Street was chosen by residents in a participatory budget vote in 2023. As part of the work, a pocket park with benches and a swing was created, concrete flower planters were installed and traffic-calming solutions were introduced.
The umbrella installation was accompanied by the construction of new lighting on Fabryczna Street, comprising 5 street lamps and 16 fixtures illuminating facades and street graphics on walls. The effect is best seen after dark, when the illuminated umbrellas and facades create a cohesive image of the street.
On the same street it is worth visiting the photograph gallery and mural on Fabryczna, and nearby stands the Church of Christian Baptists. A few hundred metres further on is the Jan Libsz Square.
