Łódź's answer to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, launched by actor Jan Machulski in 1996, now holds more than 90 stars honouring Polish film artists.
Avenue of Stars is Łódź's version of Hollywood's Walk of Fame, a pavement on Piotrkowska Street with stars set into it in honour of Polish cinema creators: actors, directors, cinematographers and composers.
The Avenue of Stars, also called Łódź's Road of Fame, was conceived in 1996 by actor Jan Machulski, inspired by the American Walk of Fame in Hollywood. Łódź, a city of a film school and film studios, was a natural place for such an idea.
The first star was set into the pavement on 28 May 1998 and was dedicated to actor Andrzej Seweryn. The ceremony took place as part of Łódź's city celebrations and coincided with the 575th anniversary of the city being granted civic rights and the 50th anniversary of Łódź's film school.
The odd-numbered, western side of Piotrkowska gathers stars of Polish film actors, while the even-numbered, eastern side belongs to other cinema creators: directors, cinematographers, set designers and composers. The star design was created by graphic designer Andrzej Pągowski, and a panel composed of Łódź artists and people associated with culture decides on the awarding of subsequent stars.
The Avenue has over 90 stars and expands regularly. Walking along Piotrkowska between 6 Sierpnia Street and Traugutta Street, including through Pasaż Artura Rubinsteina, you can recognise names familiar from screen and television credits.
Nearby, on the same street, it is worth visiting the Museum of Art in Łódź, and the Avenue is a fifteen-minute walk from the Museum of Paper and Print in the Ogrody Geyera complex.
