Versatile artist of many talents, fearless traveler, discoverer, pioneer and guardian of tradition, three-time Grammy Award winner. Dee Dee Bridgewater recently received the award for best jazz vocal album for Eleanora Fagan (1915–1959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee. Her career has always combined various musical genres. She gained her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band, and in the 1970s performed with prominent jazz musicians such as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. After an episode in pop music in the 1980s, she moved to Paris and refocused on jazz. Bridgewater began independent music production with the 1993 album Keeping Tradition.
