Their reunion is marked by death. Though dying, Staś wants to enjoy every moment of his remaining life. His brother Bolesław, physically healthy, sinks deeper into grief over the loss of his wife. Staś begins a romance with a village girl, plays lively melodies on the piano, and tries to live each hour to the fullest. Meanwhile, Bolesław struggles with his despair.
