CARMEN

Opera in four acts. Bizet once wrote that if the world had no adultery, fanaticism, crime, evil, and supernatural powers, composers would have nothing to write their operas about. This doesn't change the fact that CARMEN – a story of sexual obsession and inevitable murder for love – initially caused consternation among Parisian audiences unaccustomed to such a daring combination of comic and tragic elements. The controversial subject matter and the then-unacceptable mixing of comic and tragic elements contributed to a very cold reception of the opera during its Paris premiere. Today, listening to one of the most beautiful operas in music history, it's very hard to believe. A combination of Bizet's extraordinary, temperamental and brilliant music with a first-class libretto.
