Tove Jansson Day at the Cinematography Museum. Special screening – The Summer Book, dir. Charlie McDowell (2024)

The Summer Book, directed by Charlie McDowell, is an adaptation of Tove Jansson's 1972 novel, published in Poland in the 1980s as "Lato." This subtle narrative is filled with biographical references to Tove Jansson's closest family, the author of the Moomins saga. Young Sophia (Emily Matthews) spends her summer vacation on a small island with her grandmother (Glenn Close) and father (Anders Danielsen Lie). Her discovery of the world and summer pleasures—such as Midsummer Night, sleeping in a tent, and learning to dive—are overshadowed by grief following the death of Sophia's mother. The cinematography, filmed on the archipelagos of Kotka, Porvoo, and Espoo in the Gulf of Finland, is by Sturla Brandth Grøvlen. The score was composed by Hania Rani. The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in autumn 2024 and came to cinemas in 2025.
