Jean-Honoré Fragonard was one of the most versatile artistic talents of the 18th century: a brilliant colorist and exceptional draftsman. Training as a history painter at the Academy of Painting, he brilliantly applied these skills to genre scenes. He innovatively combined inspiration from Dutch painting with Italian grande maniera. He mastered both energetic compositions with rich texture and paintings with smooth, subtle surfaces; large canvases as well as lapidary drawing impressions and book illustrations. His works, saturated with eroticism and love of nature and freedom, permanently shaped our perception of art in the second half of the 18th century.
