About this event
Nearly 200,000 people were confined there - residents of Łódź, nearby towns, and Jews deported from Western Europe. A significant portion of the imprisoned were children - a special group for whom the Jewish ghetto administration attempted to organize an 'illusion of normalcy,' though the system of 'care' provided was far inadequate given ghetto realities. The youngest starved, were exposed to exploitation, and forced to work beyond their strength. Most importantly, however, they were participants in tragedy - witnesses to the death of loved ones and sometimes conscious documentarians of their own demise. This walk offers an opportunity to explore the ghetto from the perspective of its youngest inhabitants. We will discuss how children saw and understood their surrounding reality and how they attempted to document it.
