"Giselle" is the most typical "ballet with plot" of Romanticism, which has survived in the world repertoire to this day. The libretto by Jules-Henri Verroy de Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier is based on a legend from the Harz Mountains about the ghosts of girls who died before marriage and seduce young men with their dancing. The story of unhappy love corresponds to the ideals of Romanticism. The title role is paramount, requiring acting skills and a feeling for the romantic ballet style. The greatest theaters in the world stage this title.
At Teatr Wielki in Łódź this is the third premiere of "Giselle". The previous ones took place in 1979 with choreography by Jarosław Piasecki and in 2003 with choreography by Robert Steiner.
