Manuscript Found in an Ashtray. Belcia, the protagonist of Izabela Tadry's novel, is in constant motion: from one hotel room to another, from her mother's hands to her aunt's, from her husband to her lover, from one romance to the next adventure. Her impressive hair becomes the material from which an ideal daughter must be created: an obedient girl, an inaccessible bombshell, a faithful wife, a responsible mother, a femme fatale, a woman-child, a friend, a confidante, a goddess. After all, a contemporary woman has so many paths to choose from. Above the realistic characters hovers another, key figure: the mysterious "Mr.," to whom Belcia directs her narrative. Humor and camp collide with ostensibly unmodern lyricism, fragmented yet still pulsing beneath the surface with a great heart.
