Jacek Malczewski. The Demiurge of Symbolism in Young Poland | Muzeum Pałac Herbsta

Jacek Malczewski spent his entire artistic life compelling viewers of his paintings to conjecture and speculate. Every symbolic element, even the smallest, means something, directs the viewer's thoughts, explains. What does the thistle signify in one of his self-portraits, why did he place butterfly bush, a shrub that attracts butterflies, in another? There are also ladders, larks, chains, old books, scythes, water, wells, and lyres. His boundless imagination meant he himself became a model for his own canvases.
