Initially connected with the Czartoryski family, Norblin spent 30 years in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth between 1774 and 1804. He was a court painter who portrayed the carefree and beautiful life of his patrons in acclaimed park views and fêtes galantes, while simultaneously serving as a street iconographer fascinated by everyday urban life and minor nobility. He documented this in market scenes, religious fairs, local assemblies, street views, and character types—peasants, noblemen, Jews, beggars, and peddlers. He was an artist keenly interested in contemporary politics, depicting events related to the May 3rd Constitution, the French Revolution, and the insurrection.
