Clarice must persuade him to help the FBI track down another serial killer known as Buffalo Bill. The film's narrative is built on a unique relationship between the policewoman and the psychopathic murderer, characterized equally by fear and fascination, admiration and contempt. Lecter has consciously chosen evil, but decides to help the agent because he recognizes her sensitivity to suffering, courage, determination, and resistance to evil—qualities he despises yet yearns for. Demme's film, which launched the series of films about Hannibal Lecter, won the Oscar in five categories: Best Picture, Director and Screenplay, and Best Actor and Actress.
