Not yet twenty years old, Songlian is left orphaned by her father. She decides to abandon her studies and become the fourth wife of the wealthy merchant Chen, who lives in a palace surrounded by small houses for each of his wives. The lighting of a red lantern above the door signifies that the resident of that house has been chosen to spend the night with the husband. Competition among the women ensues for the merchant's affections. The first wife holds the best position and commands respect and admiration from the others. The second wife openly despises the young and beautiful girl, attempting to compromise her. The third wife hides a romance with the palace doctor. Devastated, Songlian invents a reason to gain greater authority: she announces that she is expecting a child, resulting in red lanterns being permanently hung above her house.
