"Cinderella"

"Cinderella" is a ballet set to music by Gioachino Rossini, choreographed and directed by Giorgio Madia. Sets and costumes were created by Cordelia Matthes in collaboration with Brigit Kofmel, with lighting by Jerzy Stachowiak. There are supposedly 700 versions of the Cinderella fairy tale. Giorgio Madia moved his version to the 1950s, which he remembered as "a period of rebirth of dreams, hope and optimism." Walt Disney's "Cinderella" was also an inspiration for him. Thus came another version of the story of a girl tormented by a wicked stepmother and her daughters, though on the Łódź stage not everything is as clear-cut as in Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. The production is full of humor and surprising staging ideas, balancing between parody and homage to the art of ballet. The roles of the stepmother and evil sisters are danced by a male trio that accompanies Cinderella at every turn. The production won Golden Masks: for Giorgio Madia for best direction and for Cordelia Matthes for best costumes and sets in the 2006/2007 season.
