Meeting with Eileen Myles at Muzeum Sztuki ms2

Associated since the 1970s with the New York artistic community, creating poetry, prose, journalistic texts, theatrical performances, performances and opera librettos, they consistently push the boundaries between poetry, autobiography and critical reflection on reality. During the meeting we will discuss poetry as a life practice and form of presence in public space, New York counterculture, traditions of queer and performative poetry, and what happens to personal experience when subjected to language. We will also participate in a performative poetry reading by Eileen Myles. The meeting accompanies the first comprehensive Polish presentation of Eileen Myles's work. Prepared by the Ośrodek Kultury i Sztuki we Wrocławiu, the volume includes approximately 60 poems from different periods of their activity – from texts related to the New York poetry scene of the 1970s and 80s to later works – and allows us to trace the development of Myles's distinctive poetics. The translation was done by Maciej Topolski, Joanna Mąkowska and Karol Poręba. Until now, only one Myles poem, "Broken Cindy", has appeared in Polish. The new volume is thus not only the first such broad encounter of Polish readers with their work, but also an important supplement to the picture of contemporary American poetry available in translation. The meeting will be moderated by Prof. Kacper Bartczak. The event is organized in cooperation with the Institute of English Studies at the University of Łódź.
