About this event
A film about courage, memory, and the extraordinary power of photography to preserve truth when witnesses fall silent. Join us on August 27 at 7:00 PM for a pre-premiere screening followed by a special meeting with filmmaker Ewa Pytka, who produced, wrote, and directed the film. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the film's creation and ask questions directly to its creator. The documentary tells the little-known story of Julia Pirotte (1907–2000), a Polish-Jewish photographer and one of the most outstanding photographers of the 20th century, whose life and work remained unknown for decades. During World War II, she worked in the French Resistance, using her camera as a weapon to document the movement, including the uprising and liberation of Marseille. Her portraits of Édith Piaf and footage used in René Clément's "Battle of the Rails" became legendary. She documented victims of the Kielce pogrom and the 1948 World Congress of Intellectuals in Defense of Peace in Wrocław, where she created famous portraits of Pablo Picasso, Julian Tuwim, and Vsevolod Pudovkin. After decades of silence, she returned to her wartime past and in 1980 won First Prize at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles.
