Welsh twins June and Jennifer Gibbons withdraw from communicating with the world. Fleeing the bleak province that offers Black girls mainly humiliation, the "silent twins" escape into neon-colored fantasies sprinkled with sunshine, dreaming of literary fame, romantic love, and pools full of Pepsi-Cola. Yet hormone-fueled teenage imagination has a darker side for June and Jennifer, as does their rivalry-tinged bond. Creating the twins' inner world on screen, Agnieszka Smoczyńska draws generously from the aesthetics of old advertisements, colorful magazines, and soap operas. She employs thriller and sensual musical, drama and stop-motion animation. An emotional powerhouse, "Silent Twins" channels its energy into an unforgettable cinematic experience.
