Opera in four acts. Not only Moniuszko's most musically perfect work, but also a leading masterpiece of 19th-century Polish opera. Outstanding ensemble scenes, subtle yet colorful orchestration, remarkable melodic invention, and captivating Polish atmosphere define this creation. Completed shortly after the January Uprising, the opera became regarded as a patriotic manifesto and was censored by Russian authorities, who removed it from the program after just three performances due to fears of unrest.
