TURANDOT

Although Carlo Gozzetti's play was the direct source for the libretto of the opera TURANDOT, Friedrich Schiller's romantic translation, which introduced the Chinese princess to Western culture, cannot be overlooked. However, it is through Giacomo Puccini's opera that this story has become a permanent fixture on theatrical stages. Despite the composer's death preventing him from completing the opera, TURANDOT is an artistically finished work. The story of the titular "bloody" Chinese princess inspired Puccini to compose a monumental work with elaborate choral scenes and demanding solo parts. The Orient, with its exoticism—a great fascination of the composer—effectively came to life in the music through a non-banal stylization shimmering with a multitude of colors.
