Daylily Week at the Botanical Garden

Daylilies originate from China, where they have been cultivated for thousands of years. The Latin name Hemerocallis comes from the Greek words hemera meaning 'day' and kallos meaning 'beauty', thus 'beauty of one day'. Individual daylily flowers bloom for only one day, but since there are many flowers on each stem that don't bloom simultaneously, they flower and enchant with their beauty for a long time. Over 70,000 registered varieties of these beautiful perennials exist today, with new ones constantly being created. In our climate, daylilies bloom from late June to early August, with most varieties flowering in July. The collection primarily features garden daylily varieties of Hemerocallis x hybrida.
