"The Promised Land" is a ballet in two acts based on Władysław Reymont's novel. It preserves the time period and main plot threads of the book: Anka's unhappy love for Karol, his affair with Lucy Zukerowa, and intrigues among the competition of the crude Müller.
Only the main protagonist changes—it is the city itself. The performance is dedicated to Łódź, which fascinated British choreographer Gray Veredon in 1999. The city's past and present, culture, tradition, and character are shown primarily through nameless figures: weavers, dyers, and Łódź workers.
The backdrop is the story of three friends—Pole Karol Borowiecki, German Max Baum, and Jew Morycz Welt—who decide to settle in Łódź and establish a cotton factory.
