Łódź is not short of places for sledding and tobogganing in winter, even though most of the city lies on flat ground. Many neighbourhoods have their own local "hills", and a little further from the centre there are several better-known slopes that draw children with sledges every year. Below is an overview of spots in Łódź, plus a few suggestions from the wider Łódź region for anyone willing to travel further.
Górka Widzewska
A rise in the park between Chmielewskiego and Milionowa streets that doesn't look like a typical hill from a distance, but works well as a gentle sledding slope. The park is large enough that there is room for several families at once.
Karolew: the hill on Kusocińskiego Street
A small rise by the "Karolek" playground, near the Carrefour store on aleja Włókniarzy. The run is made more interesting by the trees growing on the slope, which sledders can try to weave between.
Teofilów: the hill on Pasjonistów Street
A gentle slope good for the youngest and less experienced sledders. In winter it's popular with families from the estate and is a good spot for a child's first runs.
Żabieniec: the hill on Łanowa Street
A hill near Primary School No. 182, a gentle slope suitable for children taking their first attempts at sledding.
Olechów: the hill on Hetmańska Street
A rise near the Biedronka store on Hetmańska Street, recommended for more experienced sledders. The uneven ground makes for a livelier run.
ASP: the hill on Wojska Polskiego Street
The park by the Academy of Fine Arts has a few temporary winter slopes, popular with locals also for sliding down without proper equipment, on plastic sheets for instance.
Park Helenów
One of the bigger and steeper slopes in the city, popular with fans of winter fun. Caution is needed though, as the lower part of the "triple" hill ends by a frozen pond in the park.
Rudzka Góra
An artificial hill on ulica Starorudzka with a toboggan run, popular all year with people who enjoy outdoor activity, and in winter also used for sledding and cross-country skiing.
"Wieloryb" (The Whale) on Włókniarzy Street
A hill at the junction with ulica Drewnowska, named after its distinctive elongated shape. Despite being next to a busy road, it is one of the more popular sledding spots in the Bałuty district.
Region: the hill on Malinka and the 650-lecia estate in Zgierz
In Zgierz, about 15 kilometres from Łódź, a popular sledding spot is the bank by Kąpielisko Malinka, a municipal beach in summer that also doubles as a slope in winter, though care is needed with braking as the bank can be steep. Another well-known spot is the hill on the 650-lecia estate, between Boya-Żeleńskiego, Witkacego and Tuwima streets, near Primary School No. 8.
Region: the toboggan run on Góra Kamieńsk
For those willing to travel further, about 70 kilometres from Łódź in the municipality of Kamieńsk (Radomsko county), there is Góra Kamieńsk, an artificial hill built from the spoil heap of a former open-pit mine. It has a 620-metre gravity toboggan run with bends and switchbacks, open year-round, using two-seater sledges with seatbelts and brakes (speeds up to 40 km/h, children aged 3 to 8 must ride with an adult). In winter, when there's snow, a ski slope with lifts also operates there, but the site is mainly geared towards skiers and snowboarders rather than traditional snow sledding. It's worth checking the current opening hours on the resort's website before setting off.
