The Academic Centre for Artistic Initiatives is a space for theatrical experiments and new artistic forms. Located in the heart of Łódź on ulica Zachodnia, it attracts those seeking something beyond the mainstream cultural scene.
Academic Centre for Artistic Initiatives is a cultural and theatre institution run by the Łódź City Council, operating since 2005. It specialises in socially engaged theatre and cultural education. It is housed in a historic building at ulica Zachodnia 54/56, which was restored between 2018 and 2023, and offers theatre halls, galleries, artistic workshops and a hostel for artist residents.
The Academic Centre for Artistic Initiatives was founded in 2005 as successor to the renowned Theatre 77, inheriting its traditions and mission of engaged theatre. The history of this place as an artistic centre reaches back further, but it was in 2005 that the institution adopted its present name and activity profile. The complex of buildings in which AOIA operates has heritage significance. One of two main spaces is a former synagogue of the Hasidim from Aleksandrów in Łódź, dating from the pre-war period and standing as a testament to the city's multicultural history.
The complex of buildings underwent comprehensive renovation between 2018 and 2023, completed in December 2023. The investment cost 19 million złoty and resulted in complete renewal of the interiors, technical infrastructure and accessibility for people with disabilities. The renovation enabled the introduction of modern theatre infrastructure, workshop halls and shared spaces for artists. The building still bears traces of its heritage past, which harmonises with functional, contemporary furnishings.
AOIA has a main hall with capacity of approximately 500 seats with a mobile stage, an animation hall, a studio performance room, a foyer gallery, a café-gallery and workshop halls. The institution runs a hostel for resident artists with 12 rooms. It specialises in theatre and dance productions, artistic laboratories for amateurs and professionals, theatre education, workshops (creative writing for ages 13-18, dance for seniors, Argentine tango), jazz concerts, film screenings and exhibitions. It has also run social projects in the Śródmieście [city centre] and Polesie districts, engaging the local community in artistic activities.
The Academic Centre for Artistic Initiatives collaborates with the University of Łódź, the Academy of Fine Arts, the State Non-state Foundation for Theatre, Chambers and Art, and other cultural and educational institutions. The centre's mission is to create socially engaged theatre that intervenes and engages in the city and its reality. This approach distinguishes AOIA from traditional theatres, placing emphasis on dialogue with audiences and artistic action beyond the stage. The centre is directed by Piotr Kurzawa.
