About Independence Square

Independence Square is a green public space in the centre of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, ideal for walks and relaxation. You will find benches for rest, tree planting and access to local facilities.

Independence Square lies opposite the Town Hall building in the centre of Tomaszów Mazowiecki and serves a commemorative function. In its central section is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and next to it a composition in national colours in the shape of a map of Poland. This is one of those places in the city where national symbolism is directly incorporated into the layout of greenery and small architecture.

Map of Poland and one hundred oaks

The white and red composition in the shape of a map of Poland was created in inspiration by the celebrations of the centenary of regaining independence in 2018. On the same occasion, one hundred oak trees were planted in the square, one for each year of independence. This is one of several municipal green projects commemorating this anniversary in Tomaszów Mazowiecki.

History of the memorial site

The square was originally created as a memorial site by the Town Hall building. Already in the nineteen twenties there stood here a memorial plaque dedicated to the heroes of the struggles from 1914-1921, the period covering the First World War and the struggles for the borders of reborn Poland. The plaque was destroyed by the German army in October 1939, at the very beginning of occupation, which was a typical action against symbols of Polish independence in cities occupied by the Germans.

Independence Bench

An Independence Bench was installed in the square, the construction of which received support from the Ministry of National Defence and a grant of 28,500 Polish zloty. The square is also equipped with free WiFi, which makes it a convenient place for a short rest while passing through the centre.
