4 June 1989 Square

Barlickiego 2, Tomaszów Mazowiecki
About 4 June 1989 Square

A small square in central Tomaszów Mazowiecki with an obelisk commemorates Poland's first partly free parliamentary elections of 1989 - it was named in 1994.

4 June 1989 Square is located in the centre of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, at the intersection of Barlickiego and Warszawska streets. It is a small urban area with an obelisk that commemorates the first partially free parliamentary elections in post-war Poland.

Where the name came from

The square was named five years after the elections, in 1994. It was one of the first places of memory in Poland dedicated to the date of 4 June 1989. The initiator of the square's creation was Grzegorz Haraśny, the then deputy mayor of Tomaszów Mazowiecki.

The obelisk and annual commemorations

The central point of the square is the obelisk. Every year, on the anniversary of the elections, residents and representatives of the city authorities gather at it to honour the memory of the event that opened the way to a change of system.
