A theatre founded in 1949 as a socially engaged stage, with a Main Stage and an intimate studio Small Stage on Zachodnia Street, named after co-founder Kazimierz Dejmek.
Teatr Nowy in Łódź is a local authority unit conducting artistic and educational activity with two stages. It has a Main Stage and a Small Studio Stage at ulica Zachodnia 93 with a capacity of 100-150 seats, dedicated to artistic experiments.
The theatre was founded on 12 November 1949 by a group of young actors who wanted to create a contemporary political theatre with an educational character. The first premiere was the play Brygada szlifierza Karhana directed by Jerzy Merunowicz. From the beginning of its activity, the institution engaged in promoting current social and political topics through theatrical art. The philosophy of the founders was to create a stage that would entertain audiences while also educating them and inspiring critical thinking about reality. This programme from the outset defined the specific character of Łódź's Teatr Nowy, distinguishing it among other theatrical institutions in Poland.
Kazimierz Dejmek (1921-1993), one of the theatre's founders, served as its director in 1949-1961, then 1975-1980 and 2002. His long-term activity significantly influenced the artistic profile of the institution and its recognition on the cultural map of the city. In October 2007, the Łódź City Council passed a resolution naming the theatre after Kazimierz Dejmek, honouring his contribution to the history of Łódź culture.
From 2024, the theatre is managed by Marcin Brzozowski, acting director. The institution continues to engage in dramatic productions, experimental performances and educational activity. The Small Stage at ulica Zachodnia is a space for less conventional forms of theatre, supporting artists working in the avant-garde. The theatre's repertoire includes both classical works of dramatic literature and contemporary productions by Polish and international authors. Teatr Nowy organises workshops for audiences, post-performance meetings, and an educational programme aimed at schools, promoting interest in dramatic art among young people. The institution's activity is not limited to performing plays on stage, but encompasses broadly understood artistic education and building community around art.
Teatr Nowy is adjacent to Muzeum Komunikacji Miejskiej w Łodzi, and its location in Śródmieście [city centre] reflects active participation in the city's cultural life. Proximity to the main promenade and other artistic institutions means that the district around the theatre is a natural centre of meetings for art enthusiasts.
