A forest of over two hundred hectares on the edge of Zgierz, bordering the city's largest housing estate, with varied old-growth trees and a First World War military cemetery.
Las Krogulec covers over 200 hectares on the north-western edge of Zgierz, between Cegielniana, Wiosny Ludów, Daleka and Jedlicka streets. It adjoins the city's largest residential district and is a place for daily walks by its residents.
Krogulec has held city rights together with Zgierz since 1420, granted by King Władysław Jagiełło. From that time the forest area accompanied the city's development and has retained its name to this day.
The forest is home to ninety-year-old spruces, oaks, pines and hornbeams, and in places individual beeches and birches. The varied age and species composition mean the area functions as the city's green lungs, as local media remind people when writing about work in the tree stock.
Within the forest stands a war cemetery with graves of German and Russian soldiers who fell during the Łódź operation. It is a trace of the fighting that swept through the Zgierz area in the first months of the First World War.
Las Krogulec is used for recreation: mountain bike routes run through it, and forest paths serve walkers from the neighbouring residential district. Another green area in Zgierz, though of a completely different character, is the island in the City Park on Cylke pond, in the city centre.
