A regional cultural institution running since 1953, its historic building on Traugutta street under renovation since 2017, temporarily running galleries, a cinema and theatres from another address.
Łódzki Dom Kultury is an independent cultural institution of the Łódzkie Voivodeship self-government, operating since 1953. It offers art galleries, an art cinema and theatre venues, but since 2017 the main building at ul. Traugutta 18 has been closed for renovation. The institution is temporarily operating from a venue at ul. Dowborczyków 18.
The building that traditionally houses Łódzki Dom Kultury was built in 1935-1939 in a modernist style according to a design by architect Wiesław Lisowski. It is an example of interwar heritage architecture of significance to the city's history. The building underwent major renovation in 1980-1986, during which new wings were added and the elevation was covered with sandstone. The institution took over the building in 1973 and since then it has been the seat of its activities.
Renovation of the main building at ul. Traugutta 18 began in 2017. Originally planned for 2017-2018, it turned out to be significantly longer. The scope of work includes renovation of the elevation, roof thermomodernisation, window replacement, foundation sealing and relocation of the main entrance to the façade facing ul. Traugutta. The building is a heritage monument, and the work is financed from European Union funds (6.5 million EUR) for heritage renovation, which involves special conservation requirements. Progress was also slowed by the impact of high-speed rail tunnel construction (Central Communication Hub).
Since 2023, Łódzki Dom Kultury has been operating from a temporary venue in the Teodora Meyerhofa Complex, a former factory, at ul. Dowborczyków 18. The institution remains active and offers a full cultural programme. It is managed by director Monika Matusiewicz. The centre maintains venues for five art galleries (Stara, Nowa, FF, Galeria-Kawiarnia, Imaginarium), an art cinema with two screening rooms featuring European and documentary film repertoire, and venues for theatres: Teatr Pod Lupą, Teatr Griff and Teatr Etno. It organises dance competitions, festivals (Łódzkie Spotkania Teatralne, Cantio Lodziensis, Rockowanie) and courses and workshops for residents of the region.
Łódzki Dom Kultury holds an important place in the cultural landscape of the city. As a voivodeship institution since 1953, it has gathered artists and audiences around theatre, film, visual arts and artistic education. Ul. Traugatta, where the building is located, is also known as the "small great street" – illustrating changes in Łódź architecture from the 19th to 20th century. Nearby is also a mural of Artur Rubinstein, the famous Łódź pianist, located at the intersection of ul. Traugatta and ul. Sienkiewicza.
