Poland's first post-war musical theatre, founded in 1945, at its current home on Północna Street since 1964, with a repertoire of operettas and musicals for all ages.
Teatr Muzyczny w Łodzi is a cultural institution specialising in operetta, musicals and musical productions for audiences of all ages, with a rich history stretching back to 1945.
Teatr Muzyczny w Łodzi was founded in 1945 as Poland's first post-war musical theatre, initially called Operetka Łódzka. The institution was established under the direction of Władysław Szczawiński by artists from the Lutnia Musical Comedy Theatre from Vilna, who arrived in Łódź in spring 1945. The first performance took place on 3 November 1945 - the premiere of "Podwójna Buchalteria" by A. Grunn at the venue at ul. Nawrot 27, marking the start of a long theatrical tradition.
Several months after opening, the theatre moved to the building of Łódzkiego Męskiego Towarzystwa Śpiewaczego [Łódź Male Singing Society] at ul. Piotrkowska 243, where it operated for many years. In 1964, the theatre moved to its current home at ul. Północna 47/51 in Śródmieście, where it remains today. The building underwent major renovation in 2007-2011, with all theatre facilities renewed, raising the standards of productions and audience facilities.
The theatre's repertoire includes both classical operettas and contemporary musicals as well as musical productions popular with audiences of all ages. In the 2026-2027 season, the theatre's offerings include Dracula, Kraina lodu (Frozen), Mamma Mia!, Tadek na tropach Minotaura and the jubilee gala "I znów premiera". Each production is carefully prepared by an experienced team of singers, dancers and actors, supported by a professional orchestra and technical staff.
The cloakroom and café open one hour before each performance, allowing audiences to prepare and spend time in a pleasant atmosphere before entering the auditorium. The ticket office is open Tuesday to Friday from 11:00 to 18:30 (with a break from 14:00 to 14:30), Saturday from 12:00 to 18:30, Sunday from 15:00 to 18:30, and reservations can be made on weekdays from 8:00 to 16:00. July is a closure period for the ticket office and services, while in August customer service is available Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 15:00.
