MMŁ: Sport and Tourism Department

The Sport and Tourism Department of the Museum of the City of Łódź tells the history of sport and tourism in Łódź from the 19th century to the present day. The facility was established on 18 January 1982 and operated for over three decades in the Sports Hall building at ulica ks. Skorupki 21. Since 2018 it has been located at a new address: in the Academic Sports and Teaching Centre of the Łódź University of Technology, known as Zatoka Sportu [Sports Cove], at aleja Politechniki 10.

A museum that changed address

The relocation took almost two years. In 2016 the museum closed and the collections were moved to a storage facility at plac Wolności. The new exhibition opened on 18 October 2018 at Zatoka Sportu, a modern university facility with swimming pools and halls where the museum sits directly alongside active sport. This is a useful tip when planning a visit: the address at Skorupki 21 now leads to the Sports Hall, not to the museum.

Permanent exhibition Faster, Higher, Stronger

The exhibition occupies more than one hundred and twenty square metres and is divided into four sections. It traces the history of sport and tourism in Łódź from the 19th century to the present day, presenting the profiles of Olympic athletes and the most important events against the backdrop of the city's history. A strong theme is the multiculturalism of Łódź sport before 1939, when clubs were founded by Polish, German and Jewish communities side by side. The collections include documents, medals, badges, trophies, statuettes, banners and posters documenting the successes of Łódź athletes and the development of tourism in the region.

Beyond the display cases

The exhibition is designed so that visitors can do something more than just look. There are stations with physical challenges and chess tables, and the museum also offers lectures, museum lessons and competitions. The facility has extensive accessibility provision: audio description, tactile graphics materials, guided tours in Polish Sign Language, easy-to-read text versions, a quiet zone and accommodations for people on the autism spectrum. The department is one of several in the structure of the Museum of the City of Łódź, whose main headquarters is located in the Poznański Palace.

For whom this visit

This is a proposal for one to two hours, good for rainy days and for families with school-age children. It makes sense especially in combination with another point on the campus or with training or competitions: the Zatoka Sportu building itself is an active sports facility.
